Dylan Holmes, the reigning champion, is set to return to County Sligo Golf Club this Friday, April 3rd, with the ambitious goal of securing a second consecutive title at the prestigious West of Ireland Men’s Amateur Open Championship. This tournament traditionally marks the beginning of the Golf Ireland Championships season, attracting a strong contingent of 126 top amateur golfers from Ireland and beyond to the renowned links of Rosses Point.
The championship format begins with two rounds of stroke play qualifying on Friday and Saturday. This will narrow the field down to the top 64 players, who will then advance to a series of intense one-on-one match play contests, culminating in the crowning of a new champion on Tuesday afternoon, April 7th.
Last year, at just 18 years old, Holmes achieved a remarkable breakthrough victory in his debut appearance at a men’s championship. He navigated challenging conditions to overcome the experienced West veteran, Colm Campbell of Warrenpoint, in a thrilling final match. The Greystones golfer displayed remarkable composure, clinching a 2&1 win that sparked heartfelt celebrations among his friends, family, and clubmates who had traveled from Wicklow to support him.
Reflecting on his triumph, Holmes shared, “It was such a good week; it really kickstarted my men’s golf career.” He added, “My dad was there the whole week, and my mum, sister, and some cousins joined later. We had a lot of family support.” He also noted, “Quite a few Greystones members came too, which was fantastic. They got to witness all the golf, and I could see how much it meant to them, as well as to me.”
His victory swiftly drew comparisons to a young Rory McIlroy, who famously won his second West title in 2006 at the age of 17. Holmes, however, remains grounded about such comparisons. “You can compare me to Rory in this, but he won it the year after, then he won everything else, and a few years later, The Masters,” Holmes remarked. “There’s no real comparison, truly, but it’s always cool to be compared to Rory, it’s very cool.”
While Holmes aims to defend his title, the competition is formidable, with a packed field of elite contenders all eager to etch their names into the tournament’s illustrious history of past champions. A particularly strong grouping will commence play early on Friday morning at 7:30 AM, featuring recent regional slam winner Caolan Rafferty (Dundalk), the 2024 Irish Men’s Amateur Open Champion Matthew McClean (Malone), and former South, East, and Irish Amateur champion Colm Campbell.
Holmes expressed his admiration for these seasoned players: “I’ve never played with Matt or Caolan, and only faced Colm in last year’s final, but their consistency is something truly admirable.” He continued, “It’s an aspiration. Rafferty has now won all four of the championships. Very few amateur golfers manage to maintain such a high level for an extended period; it’s brilliant.” He concluded, “When I analyze their games, I often compare myself to them, seeking ways to reach that next level of consistency.”
Holmes will begin his title defense at 7:41 AM, paired with two other promising talents: local favorite Aodhagan Brady (Co. Sligo) and the reigning Irish Intervarsity Champion Patrick Curran (Edmondstown).
This 102nd edition of the tournament introduces fresh challenges with newly remodeled greens on the Par 5 third and 12th holes, alongside refined fairways and several new tee boxes. Despite these course enhancements, Holmes intends to maintain the straightforward approach that proved successful a year ago.
“I try not to get caught up in specific goals or anything, as I aim to stay as present as possible. I tend to start overthinking, which usually isn’t beneficial,” Holmes explained. “For me, I’m going to focus on one shot at a time and hopefully make it to the match play stage, then take it from there. That’s what worked last year, and it turned out well, so hopefully, we can achieve something similar.” He concluded, “I’m just going to try and enjoy it as much as possible. It’s a brilliant event, and there’s such an incredible atmosphere around the place.”
